February 2026 Newsletter

February often centers love as something we give to others. At Prism, we also hold space for the love we practice toward ourselves. Caring for ourselves through rest, boundaries, creativity, and asking for support is not selfish or separate from community care. It is how we stay connected, present, and able to show up for one another.

When we care for ourselves, we strengthen our community. Every support group, leadership meeting, creative gathering, and quiet check-in is part of that shared practice, building resilience, affirming worth, and reminding each other that no one has to navigate this alone. This month, we are reflecting on how care, in all its forms, helps make belonging possible.

If you have questions, need support, or simply want to connect, we are always here. Reach out to us at info@prismunited.org

Meet Ash Schatz (he/him), a senior at the University of South Alabama majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology.

Ash is an intern working with Prism on an archival digitization project to scan, preserve, and organize pieces of local queer history so they can be shared and safeguarded for generations to come. This includes materials like The Alternative, a bold LGBTQ-focused publication from the 1980s that was created right here in Mobile, Alabama. Its tagline? “All the News That’s Sick To Print.”

This project goes beyond archiving; it’s a way to honor the stories that shaped our community and ensure they’re never lost.

Have flyers, photos, zines, newsletters, or other pieces of local LGBTQ+ history you’d like to see preserved? We would love to add them to the collection. Email us at info@prismunited.org to get started.

We’re grateful to our friends at Cornerstone Metropolitan Community Church for hosting an unforgettable evening with award-winning LGBTQ+ reporter and editor Nico Lang, author of American Teenager. Prism staff were honored to attend alongside former Leadership Initiative youth, who had the chance to meet Nico and receive copies of his book, stories in hand that reflect so much of their own lived experience.

A National Bestseller and 2025 Stonewall Book Award Honoree, American Teenager offers a vivid, compassionate portrait of eight trans and nonbinary teens across the country, following their daily triumphs, struggles, and everything that makes growing up trans in America complex, tender, and real.

For our youth, this wasn’t just a book event. It was a moment of recognition: seeing themselves on the page, meeting the person who helped carry those stories into the world, and being reminded that their lives, voices, and futures matter. Spaces like this are how community becomes possibility.
