The Guiding Principles that Shape Our Path

Vision Statement

Prism United is a trusted resource, a reliable friend, and an essential support for LGBTQ+ youth and the people who love them in the Southwest Alabama community and is widely recognized as the place where LGBTQ+ youth can find love and belonging and be their authentic selves.

Our Values

Our values inform how we lead, connect, and grow, guiding our work to create environments where LGBTQ+ youth feel seen, supported, and empowered to live fully as themselves.

Diversity & Inclusion

Everyone’s voice matters. We value the full range of experiences and perspectives each person brings.

Safety

Everyone deserves to feel safe and protected. Secure environments make it possible to grow, heal, and thrive.

Community

Individual well-being is shaped by the systems around us. Supporting LGBTQ+ youth requires collective care and ongoing community investment.

Research

We make informed, data-driven decisions grounded in research on LGBTQ+ youth well-being.

Joy

Joy and self-expression are essential. We celebrate them as tools for empowerment, resilience, and connection.

Trust

Trust is built through honesty, transparency, and accountability. It allows for open, compassionate communication.

Equity

We reject hierarchical models that reinforce inequity and instead practice shared power and collaboration.

Queerness

Queerness invites us to question norms, challenge systems, and reimagine ourselves and the world around us.

Cooperative Governing Ethos

We believe in shared leadership that centers the voices of LGBTQ+ youth and the communities we serve. Our approach intentionally moves away from traditional power structures, creating space for collaboration, accountability, and collective decision-making.

Through this ethos, we foster a culture where feedback is valued, responsibility is shared, and decisions reflect the needs and experiences of our community.

Partnership Ethos

Prism United prioritizes strong, authentic relationships with the LGBTQ+ community, local institutions, and partner organizations across Southwest Alabama. We believe our impact is strengthened through collaboration grounded in shared values.

We work with partners who are committed to open dialogue, assuming best intentions, allowing space for growth, prioritizing kindness and integrity, and respecting autonomy and consent. Together, these principles help us build relationships that are thoughtful, accountable, and aligned with our mission.
